5 Study Tips for Better Focus

How to Create the Perfect Study Space and Mindset

Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, your mind just keeps wandering while you study? You’re not alone! This post is inspired by my popular Pinterest Pin on 5 Study Tips for Better Focus. These simple but powerful tips have already helped many learners stay on track. I’m excited to share a little more about them here!

Here’s how you can set yourself up for better focus, whether you’re studying, working on a big project, or just need a quiet moment to concentrate.

Start With a Study Drink

Before you even crack open your books or notes, treat yourself to a cozy drink! Staying hydrated is essential for clear thinking, and having something comforting to sip can turn studying into a small ritual.

Why it helps: Hydration improves brain function and keeps you from feeling sluggish.
Try this: Keep a water pitcher on your desk so you can keep sipping as you work.
My go-to: A cup of lukewarm green tea for a refreshing boost.
Set the Mood with Lighting

Good lighting isn’t just about aesthetics — it actually helps your brain stay alert. A well-lit space reduces eye strain and creates a more inviting atmosphere to study in.

Natural light is best, so if you can, open the blinds!
Warm desk lamps cast a soft light that feels inviting and helps your mind settle into study mode.
Screen color and brightness: Bright and blue-tinted screens can help you concentrate better, but they’re harsh on the eyes. Use them for short bursts to boost focus, especially in bright spaces.
Create a Dedicated Space

Even if you don’t have a huge desk, carving out a small study area makes a huge difference. It tells your brain: “It’s time to focus.”

What it can be: a regular spot with a table and a comfortable chair, like a corner of your room. A consistent setup makes settling in easier and keeps your body comfortable while studying.
Set up supplies: Keep the basic tools in your study space. These could be pens, flashcards, textbooks, and sticky notes. It’s much easier to jump straight into studying when you already have what you need!
Decorate it! Add a small plant or something that makes you smile, like a cute coaster or a calming candle. Personal touches make your study spot feel inviting and special.
Use a Timer for Study Blocks

The Pomodoro technique is a classic for a reason. Work in short, focused sprints (usually 25 minutes) followed by a 5-minute break. For many, the Pomodoro technique helps boost focus by creating short, structured blocks. Personally, I use it to remind me to take a break. It’s a lifesaver since I’m prone to hyperfocus!

Why it works: Short bursts keep you motivated and prevent overworking yourself.
Try this: Use a timer app or even your phone’s built-in timer to track your focus and break blocks.
My go-to app: I’ve tried many Pomodoro apps, but Pomocat has been my favorite. It’s customizable (even in the free version!) and so cute, which makes focusing feel more fun.
Block Out Distractions

We all know how tempting it is to scroll on your phone or get sucked into random distractions. Noises can be very distracting, too, especially if you’re a highly sensitive person (HSP).

Try setting your phone to Do Not Disturb while you work.
Erase noise: Noise-canceling headphones or even regular earbuds can help create a bubble of focus. Many people, myself included, have also found help in Loop Earplugs. They’re great when you just want quiet without any music.
Instrumental music: Lo-fi beats, classical, or nature sounds are great because they don’t have lyrics that might pull your brain in another direction.

Make Studying a Little Easier

All of these tips are here to help you create a space and mindset that supports your focus. Start with the one that feels easiest or most fun, and build from there. Even small changes can make your study time more intentional and focused.
